Our Story

Four generations of farming tradition

Family Roots

The Bass Family has been farming in Florida since the early 1900s.

Our great-grandfather, Murray Aaron Bass, was a Florida cracker, cow hunting across the state out of the Kissimmee area. His son, our grandfather Billy Odell Bass, earned a master's degree in animal husbandry from the University of Florida and served as a county agent for Glades County. He and our grandmother raised our father in Moore Haven, where Papaw kept dairy replacement heifers, veal calves, and a citrus grove.

Our father, Murray Aaron Bass II, followed him to UF, earning a bachelor's degree in agriculture with a major in fruit crops. In 2000, he purchased our grove in Homestead — avocados only at the time. Our grandparents eventually joined him there after selling their property in Moore Haven. Some of our fondest memories are of long summer days picking avocados alongside Papaw, breaking only for lunch and sweet tea made by our even sweeter Grammy.

In 2006, Dad converted the grove to regenerative practices. It wasn't without challenges — a lethal fungal disease called Laurel Wilt took 60% of our avocado trees. But Dad was undeterred. Guided by the principles of regenerative agriculture, he transformed what had been a monocrop operation into something far more alive. Papaya, mango, lime, black sapote, achacha, dragon fruit, and many others now grow alongside the avocados in a thriving tropical fruit forest. Not a single chemical has been applied since 2006.

Papaw has passed on, and as Dad enters retirement, my brother and I are proud to carry the family business forward — bringing fresh fruit to the good people of Florida and beyond.
